What Are Google AI Overviews and How Do They Affect SEO?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the web pages that support the answer. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience built on the same idea. Google says there are no special requirements to appear: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and normal SEO best practices apply. The practical effect is fewer clicks on simple questions and more value in being the cited source.
- To be a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search.
- Google says no special schema, AI text files or markup are needed for AI features.
- AI Overviews only appear when Google judges them additive, so many queries do not trigger one.
- Traffic from AI features is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type.
- nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google shows; Google-Extended does not control Search.
How AI Overviews and AI Mode Work
An AI Overview is a short generated answer at the top of a results page, followed by links Google considers supporting sources. AI Mode goes further: a full conversational experience where people ask complex or comparative questions and follow up, with links throughout the response.
Google's AI features documentation explains that both can use a "query fan-out" technique, running multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response. That means a single question like "is a heat pump worth it in South Florida?" can pull supporting links from pages about efficiency ratings, utility costs, humidity and installation, not just pages that match the exact phrase.
Google also says AI Overviews only appear when its systems decide they add something beyond classic results, and that they often do not trigger. Navigational searches (a brand name) and many local "near me" searches still look mostly like traditional results with the map pack.
How Pages Get Chosen
Google's position is clear: there are no additional technical requirements and no special optimization for AI features. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Beyond that, Google lists the same fundamentals it recommends for all of Search:
- Allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or firewall settings.
- Make content findable through internal links.
- Provide a good page experience.
- Put important content in text, supported by quality images and video where useful.
- Keep structured data consistent with visible content.
- Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information current.
Google explicitly says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup. Pages that directly answer a sub-question, with a clear heading and a concise explanation, are naturally easier to use as a supporting source.
What Changes for SEO
Fewer clicks on simple questions
If the answer to "what temperature should I set my AC to?" appears in an overview, fewer people need to click. Businesses that relied on high-volume, simple informational queries for traffic are most exposed. Google, for its part, says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with visitors more likely to spend time on the site.
Being the cited source matters more
With fewer clicks to go around, being one of the linked sources is the new visibility. That favors pages with original, specific information: real pricing ranges, local conditions, first-hand experience, clear comparisons. Generic content that restates what every other page says gives Google little reason to cite you.
Measure value, not just visits
Google recommends looking past raw clicks to conversions such as sales, signups and calls. For a service business, ten visitors who book an estimate are worth more than a hundred who read a definition and leave.
How to Measure AI Overview Performance
Traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in Search Console's Performance report within the "Web" search type, alongside regular results. Search Console does not give a separate filter that isolates AI Overview clicks, so you infer the effect:
- Watch for queries where impressions rise but click-through rate falls; an overview is often the reason.
- Search your most important queries yourself and note whether an overview appears and whether you are cited.
- Track conversions from organic search in GA4, so you can see whether fewer visits still produce the same leads.

Can You Opt Out?
Google treats AI as part of Search, so the controls are Search controls. Use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex to limit what is shown from your pages. Note that these also affect regular snippets, and noindex removes the page from Search entirely.
The Google-Extended robots.txt token manages whether content can be used for training Gemini models and for grounding in some other Google products. According to Google's AI features page, it is not the control for AI features in Search; Googlebot directives are.
For most businesses, opting out costs more than it saves. The better move is to make your pages the most useful source on your topic. Our guides on writing content AI search engines cite and the SEO vs GEO comparison cover how.

Related Questions
Do I need special schema markup to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google states there is no special schema.org structured data required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard structured data can still help Google understand a page and qualify it for rich results, but it must match visible content and is not a shortcut into AI features.
Can I see AI Overview clicks separately in Search Console?
Not as a dedicated filter. Google includes AI Overview and AI Mode traffic in the Performance report under the Web search type, combined with regular results. Comparing impressions, click-through rate and conversions over time is the practical way to judge the effect.
Are AI Overviews the same as featured snippets?
No. A featured snippet quotes a passage from one page. An AI Overview is a generated summary that can draw on several sources and link to multiple pages. Both reward clear, direct answers, but AI Overviews can cite pages that do not rank first.
Do AI Overviews show up for local searches?
They can appear on some local and service questions, but many local searches, especially near me queries, still lead with the map pack and Business Profiles. Keeping your Google Business Profile complete and accurate remains essential for local visibility.
