Google Ads vs Local Services Ads

4 min readUpdated By the DR3AM Systems team
Quick Verdict

Local Services Ads (LSAs) charge per qualified lead (a call, message or booking) rather than per click, show at the top of many local searches with a Google Verified badge, and require business verification such as license and insurance checks in many categories. Google Search ads charge per click, need a landing page and more management, but give far more control over keywords, ad copy and targeting. For eligible home and professional services, running both is common.

Key Points
  • LSAs bill per lead; Search ads bill per click, whether or not the visitor contacts you.
  • In October 2025 Google replaced the Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified badges with one Google Verified badge.
  • LSA ranking depends heavily on reviews, responsiveness and profile quality, not just your bid.
  • Google may credit LSA leads it judges invalid, such as spam, duplicates or out-of-area requests.
  • LSAs are only available for specific service categories and locations.

Bottom Line

Choose Local Services Ads if your business is in an eligible category, you can pass verification and you answer the phone fast, since you pay only for leads. Choose Google Search ads if you need control over which searches and services you appear for, you are not LSA-eligible, or you want to promote specific high-value jobs.

How Local Services Ads Work

Local Services Ads appear at the top of Google results for many local service searches, such as "plumber near me" or "immigration lawyer Fort Lauderdale," and in Google Maps. Each listing shows your business name, rating, review count, hours and service area. A customer can call, message or, in some categories, request a booking directly from the ad.

You set an average weekly budget and a bidding mode. Google charges for qualifying leads: an answered call, a message, a voicemail or a booking request. Google's help documentation lists contacts it does not charge for, including spam, duplicate contacts from the same person within a set window, very short missed calls and unanswered calls outside your business hours. Charged leads are also reassessed after the fact, and some invalid or low-quality leads are credited automatically, though this does not apply in every region or vertical.

The setup is quicker than a Search campaign in one respect: you do not need ad copy or a landing page. In another, it is slower: you must pass Google's verification checks before your ads run.

The Google Verified Badge

LSAs previously showed different badges by industry: Google Guaranteed for many home services, Google Screened for professional services such as legal and financial, and License Verified for some trades. In October 2025, Google retired those badges and the money-back guarantee that came with Google Guaranteed, and consolidated them into a single Google Verified badge.

The checks behind the badge still vary by category and location. Depending on your trade, Google may verify your business registration, professional licenses, insurance and background checks for owners or field workers. Businesses that were already verified were moved to the new badge automatically. Budget a few weeks for verification if you are new, and keep documents current, since lapsed licenses or insurance can pause your ads.

How Google Search Ads Differ

A standard Search campaign gives you control that LSAs do not. You choose keywords, block irrelevant searches with negative keywords, write ad copy, pick landing pages, schedule ads by hour and target precise areas. You can promote one high-margin service, such as roof replacement instead of repairs, and send each search to a page built for it.

The tradeoff is that you pay for every click, including people who browse and leave, and results depend heavily on landing page quality and ongoing optimization. See our comparison of landing pages vs homepages for ads for why the destination matters so much.

What Decides Who Shows Up First in LSAs

Google's help page on LSA rankings says listings are ordered by an auction that weighs your bid together with how likely your ad is to produce a lead and the overall quality of your profile. Profile quality includes your rating, number of reviews and how quickly you respond to customers. Missed calls and slow responses hurt.

That makes LSA performance an operations problem as much as a marketing one. Practical habits:

  • Answer calls live during your listed hours, or shorten your hours to match when someone can answer.
  • Reply to messages within minutes, using automation to acknowledge instantly if needed.
  • Keep a steady stream of Google reviews; see how to get more Google reviews without breaking policy.
  • Only select the service types and areas you actually want, since every matching lead costs money.

Running Both Together

For eligible businesses, the two formats complement each other. LSAs capture broad, high-intent searches at a per-lead price, while Search ads cover specific services, keywords LSAs do not trigger on, and areas you want to push harder. Track both in the same CRM so you can compare cost per booked job, not just cost per lead, and tag LSA calls separately so you can see which channel produces better customers.

A simple way to start: launch LSAs with a modest weekly budget, run a small Search campaign for your two or three most profitable services, and review both after six to eight weeks. Shift budget toward whichever produces more booked jobs per dollar, and keep the other running at a lower level so you are not dependent on a single channel.

If you are in a category LSAs do not cover, Search ads plus a strong Google Business Profile are your main paid and organic local tools.

Related Questions

Which businesses can use Local Services Ads?

LSAs are available for a defined list of categories, mostly home services (plumbers, HVAC, electricians, cleaners, roofers and similar) and some professional services such as lawyers, financial planners and real estate agents, in supported countries. Google's Local Services Ads site lets you check your category and area before signing up.

Do I still need a Google Business Profile with LSAs?

LSAs have their own profile, but linking a Google Business Profile is common and reviews can carry across. More importantly, your Business Profile drives free Maps and local pack visibility, which LSAs do not replace. Maintain both.

What happens to the old Google Guaranteed money-back promise?

Google discontinued it in October 2025 when it replaced the earlier badges with the Google Verified badge. The new badge signals that a business passed Google's verification checks, but it no longer comes with a Google-backed reimbursement for customers.

Can I choose which jobs LSAs send me?

Partly. You select job types and service areas, and you can turn off types you do not want. You cannot target individual keywords or write your own ad text the way you can in Search campaigns, so expect some leads for work you would rather not take.
