Google Analytics 4 vs Google Search Console

4 min readUpdated By the DR3AM Systems team
Quick Verdict

Google Search Console reports how your site performs in Google Search before anyone clicks: queries, impressions, clicks, average position, indexing status and technical issues. Google Analytics 4 reports what happens after visitors arrive from any channel: sessions, engagement, key events such as form submissions, and revenue. They answer different questions and are free, so every business site should use both and link them so Search Console data appears inside GA4.

Key Points
  • Search Console data comes from Google Search itself; no tracking code on your site is required.
  • GA4 needs the Google tag on your pages and is affected by consent choices and ad blockers.
  • Search Console keeps up to 16 months of performance data; GA4 standard properties retain detailed exploration data for 2 or 14 months.
  • GA4 calls conversions key events; set them up or GA4 cannot tell you which traffic produced leads.
  • Click counts in the two tools rarely match exactly, because they measure different things.

Bottom Line

Use Search Console when you need to know how you appear in Google Search, which queries bring impressions and whether pages are indexed. Use GA4 when you need to know which channels and pages drive leads and sales; most businesses need both, linked together.

Before the Click vs After the Click

The simplest way to remember the difference: Search Console is about Google Search, GA4 is about your website.

Search Console reports what Google sees. Every time your page appears in a Google search result, that is an impression; every time someone clicks it, that is a click. Search Console groups this by query, page, country, device and search type, and shows your average position. It also tells you whether Google can crawl and index your pages and flags problems such as manual actions or security issues.

GA4 reports what visitors do once they arrive, regardless of where they came from. It records events like page views, scrolls, clicks, form submissions and purchases, and attributes them to channels such as organic search, paid search, social, email or referral.

What Search Console Is Best For

  • Finding keyword opportunities. Queries with high impressions but low click-through rate suggest a title or description worth improving, or a page that ranks on page two and needs work.
  • Diagnosing traffic drops. If organic traffic falls, Search Console shows whether impressions, rankings or click-through rate changed, and for which pages.
  • Indexing. The Page indexing report and URL Inspection show which pages are in Google's index and why others are not.
  • Technical health. Core Web Vitals, HTTPS and structured data reports surface issues that affect search appearance.

Search Console data covers only Google. For Bing, which also feeds Microsoft Copilot, use Bing Webmaster Tools; see how to submit your website to Google and Bing.

What GA4 Is Best For

  • Measuring leads and sales by channel. With key events configured for form submissions, calls, bookings or purchases, GA4 shows which channels and campaigns produce results.
  • Understanding behavior. Which pages people land on, how engaged they are and where they drop out of a funnel.
  • Feeding ad platforms. GA4 key events can be imported into Google Ads to inform bidding.
  • Comparing all marketing in one place, including email, social and referral traffic that Search Console never sees.

GA4 only knows what you tell it to track. Out of the box it records basic engagement; leads require setup. Our guide to setting up GA4 conversion tracking covers the details.

Why the Numbers Never Match

Business owners often notice that Search Console reports more organic clicks than GA4 reports organic sessions. That is normal. The tools count different things:

  • Search Console counts clicks on Google results; GA4 counts sessions that loaded the tag and were attributed to organic search.
  • Visitors who decline analytics cookies, use blockers or leave before the page loads may not appear in GA4.
  • GA4 includes organic traffic from Bing and other engines; Search Console does not.
  • Search Console omits some rare queries to protect privacy, so query totals are lower than page totals.
  • Time zones, attribution settings and data processing delays differ.

Use each tool for the questions it answers and watch trends rather than reconciling exact numbers.

Search Console also counts appearances in Google's AI features. Google's documentation says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the overall Web search data in the Performance report, without a separate filter. If impressions rise while clicks stay flat, AI answers satisfying the query on the results page is one possible explanation worth investigating.

Linking the Two

GA4 can link to a Search Console property so Search Console's query and landing-page data appears in GA4 reports. This lets you see which search queries lead to landing pages and then how engaged those visitors were. You need the right permissions in both tools, and each GA4 web data stream links to one Search Console property. Linking does not merge the datasets completely, but it saves switching between tools for routine reviews.

A good monthly routine: check Search Console for indexing problems and query trends, then check GA4 for leads by channel and landing page. Tie those numbers to revenue using the approach in how to measure marketing ROI.

Related Questions

Do I need both if I am a small business?

Yes. Both are free and answer different questions. Search Console tells you whether Google can find your pages and which searches show them; GA4 tells you whether visitors become leads. Skipping either leaves a blind spot, and setup for both takes an hour or two.

Does Search Console show data from AI Overviews?

Google includes clicks and impressions from AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode within the overall Web search data in the Performance report. It does not currently provide a separate filter for them, so you cannot isolate AI Overview traffic in the standard report.

Can I see what keywords people searched in GA4?

Not from GA4's own tracking. Google does not pass organic search queries to analytics. Linking Search Console to GA4 brings query data into GA4's Search Console reports, which is the closest you can get to seeing queries alongside on-site behavior.

How long does GA4 keep my data?

Standard GA4 properties can retain user-level and event-level data for exploration reports for 2 or 14 months; set it to 14 months. Standard aggregated reports are not limited by that setting. For longer history or raw data, GA4 can export to BigQuery.
