What Is App Store Optimization (ASO)?
App store optimization (ASO) is the work of improving an app's store listing so it ranks for relevant searches in the Apple App Store and Google Play, and converts more of the people who see it into downloads. It covers the app name, subtitle or short description, keywords, description, icon, screenshots, preview video, ratings and reviews, and localization. Apple says search results draw on text relevance and user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews.
- ASO has two jobs: getting found in store search and convincing people to install once they see the listing.
- On Apple, the app name and subtitle are 30 characters each and the hidden keyword field is 100 characters.
- On Google Play, the title is 30 characters, the short description 80 and the full description 4,000, and the text is indexed.
- Screenshots and the icon drive conversion more than most text does.
- Ratings, reviews and app quality feed rankings, so ASO cannot fix a weak app.
How Store Search Works
Both stores rank apps on a mix of relevance and performance. Apple states that App Store search results are based on factors including text relevance (matches for the app's title, subtitle, keywords and primary category) and user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Google Play's guidance similarly points to the store listing text, quality signals and user engagement.
That means ASO has two halves. Discoverability is about matching the words people actually search. Conversion is about what happens when they see your listing: does the icon, first screenshot and rating convince them to tap Get or Install? Better conversion also feeds rankings over time, because downloads and engagement are signals.
Apple App Store Listing Fields
- App name (up to 30 characters): your brand plus, if it reads naturally, a descriptive term. Apple warns against generic names and names too similar to other apps.
- Subtitle (up to 30 characters): a concise phrase about what the app does, shown under the name.
- Keyword field (100 characters): hidden from users. Separate terms with commas, no spaces after commas, and do not repeat words already in your name, subtitle or category. Apple notes improper use of keywords is a common rejection reason, and competitor trademarks do not belong here.
- Promotional text (170 characters): can be changed any time without a new version, but it does not affect search ranking.
- Screenshots and app previews: must show the app in use, not just a splash screen or login page.
- Custom product pages: alternate versions of your page with different screenshots and messaging, which can be tied to ad campaigns and assigned their own keywords.
Google Play Listing Fields
- App name (up to 30 characters).
- Short description (up to 80 characters): the first text many users read.
- Full description (up to 4,000 characters): Google Play has no hidden keyword field, so the description is where you naturally explain features using the terms people search. Google warns that repetitive or irrelevant keyword use can lead to suspension.
- Graphics: icon, feature graphic, screenshots and an optional video.
- Store listing experiments: Play Console can A/B test icons, graphics and text against your current listing.
Both stores police metadata. Apple bars packing your listing with trademarked terms, popular app names, pricing information or irrelevant phrases. Google Play's metadata policy bars ranking or performance claims such as "#1" or "best" in the app title, icon and developer name, along with misleading or repetitive keywords.
A Practical ASO Routine
- Research terms. Type candidate phrases into each store's search bar and note autocomplete suggestions and which apps rank. Think about how a customer describes the problem, not how you describe your product.
- Write for people first. Put the clearest description of the app's value in the subtitle or short description. Keyword stuffing hurts conversion and risks rejection.
- Design screenshots as a sales story. The first two or three images carry most of the weight. Show the core benefit with short captions, using real app screens.
- Ask for ratings at the right moment. Use Apple's and Google's built-in review prompts after a success, such as a completed order, rather than on first launch.
- Respond to reviews. Replies show prospective users that problems get fixed.
- Localize. In South Florida, a Spanish-language listing can matter as much as the English one for consumer apps.
- Test and revisit. Run listing experiments, check results in App Store Connect and Play Console analytics, and review the listing with each release.
Where ASO Fits in Your Marketing
For a consumer app that needs strangers to find it, ASO is a core channel. For a business app whose users already know you, such as patients of a clinic or customers of a restaurant group, most installs come from your own channels: website links, emails, texts, receipts and signs in your location. The listing still has to look trustworthy and explain the app clearly, but heavy keyword work matters less.
Either way, ASO amplifies quality rather than replacing it. Crashes, poor reviews and uninstalls drag rankings down. Get the basics right first: see why apps get rejected and the publishing guides for the App Store and Google Play. Your website still does the heavy lifting for search engines, which is where SEO comes in.

Related Questions
How long does ASO take to show results?
Metadata changes on Apple require a new app version, while Google Play listing changes can be published on their own. Rankings typically respond over days to weeks as the stores collect download and engagement data. Track impressions, conversion rate and installs from search in the store consoles rather than guessing.
Can I use competitor names as keywords?
You should not. Apple's guidelines prohibit using trademarked terms, competitor app names and other irrelevant terms in your metadata, and Google Play treats misleading or irrelevant keywords as a policy violation. Either can lead to rejection or removal.
Do paid search ads in the App Store help organic ranking?
Apple Search Ads and Google App campaigns place your app at the top of results for chosen terms. Any effect on organic ranking is indirect, through more downloads and engagement. They are useful for learning which keywords convert before you commit metadata to them.
Is ASO the same as SEO?
They share ideas such as keyword research and relevance, but the systems differ. ASO optimizes listings inside the App Store and Google Play, with limited fields and heavy weight on downloads and ratings. SEO optimizes web pages for search engines and AI assistants, where content depth and links matter more.
